Wiring to Canada
Close to the end of the school year of 2008.
Like every other normal day my parents are going to put my Sis Daria to sleep. Just before they went my mom said:”Katty we need to talk about something really important!”.
I couldn’t think of anything really important and I knew
nothing important was going on in my family. Well, not as far as I knew .I watched TV while brain storming what could be the “important thing”. Finally when my parents came out of the room
trying to be serious but failing after a couple of seconds bursting out laughing .When they sat in our “ kinda messy “ living room
My dad said:” We got a choice from my work “.Would you like living in Canada? Finished my mom. Without thinking I said “YES!” Then I ran to the computer searched up “Vancouver”
and found a water park .I was more and more excited till I noticed that I won’t see my loving sweet family that often any more. When my parents told the whole family of course they were sad and even kind of mad. After about 2 month of packing there came the day before I was moving when I went to sleep I realized that this would be the last time I would ever sleep in this apartment but then I remembered that my grandparents from my moms side are going to live in this place! So, I felt a bit relived .When I woke up in the morning my parents told me that they were up the whole night .I felt bad for them they had they had to carry Dasha the whole day! When the evening came the streets are dark we went to my grandma for a “snack”. My grandma loves to cook so she made mini sandwiches with fish eggs, and other stuff like salads.
When I was full I looked at the clock and I got more nervous I went to the bathroom because I felt a bit sick but I was fine
. Finally when it was time to go I went into my grandma’s car with
My mom and sis. Than we
Came to the airport .We places are stuff into the plain and went on. When we came to check place we had to say goodbye to the whole family. Of course my mom burst into tears so did I my dad didn’t cry at all well, my sister didn’t either I don’t think she understood what was happening .When we past the security check we had to do a passport check. When we were done the passport check we were to go to the waiting place. We waited another 30 min and went onto the plain. After we were in the air the workers (stewardesses) turned on the mini TV’s.
After like 2 hours we landed because one of the stewardesses
didn’t feel well . On the plain I saw 3 movies and slept for most of the time. We landed in Toronto in 10 hours. After this short connection we flew to Vancouver. After 5 hours we landed in Vancouver. We got a car from Avis which was a Hyundai Santa Fe.
Soon we were in port moody. My sister was sleeping for the whole car drive. When we arrived at the house we were supposed to live in for 2 month I already liked it. It looked fancier and newer than our apartment In Israel. We got into the garage and found our place, parked the car and got out. We got into our apartment , my sister was still asleep , my mom went on the couch , I went onto the carpet , and my dad actually ….. Umm I don’t remember
I think he went to buy medicine for my mom and than went to sleep too. When I woke up everybody was already up .
On the next day I we went to explore the area we found out that
There is a park near by too. Everyday we went to that park . Once we came to the park and went some other way though there was a
Pole with the sign that said:” Caution bear near by. Last seen
July 5th”.My mom and I got freaked out we stood there for a while thinking should we go or shouldn’t we? But we decided that we will. When we got there we saw mom’s with baby’s younger than my sis! We were so surprised! It was so unusual for us to read signs that say “ Bears in the area” and past that sign people are not afraid of bears! After a week from July 7th the date of our arrival was my birthday! July 16th.When I woke up I knew it’s my birthday. I got out of my room and saw a baguette of flowers and a cake! I was so happy. I didn’t need any present my present was to be with my parents and sister! Still we went to a really fancy restaurant called Cannery seafood restaurant. We had a wonderful time. After a week or so my parent’s wanted me to go to
To summer school to learn some English before going to the real school. I had a test and I didn’t have the worst class I had a pretty high level! After I finished summer school we found our own apartment to live in because the one we lived in before was from my dad’s work. The apartment was in SFU . We found out what schools we connect to and they were Westridge or Sperling. We
Picked westridge because it’s English emersion. I was really excited and bought all the stuff. That is my life , my happy , exciting , and interesting life!

ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this story Katrin. I can only imagine the thoughts and feelings that you must have had when you learned that you would be moving. I'm glad that you are here!
ReplyDeleteWe've been talking a lot about finding the big idea, or the "so what?" in our writing, about finding that one feeling or moment of understanding that we want our readers to experience after they read our work. In order to do this, it is sometimes necessary to cut away bits and pieces from what we write. Sometimes a writer will get rid of most of what she writes, only leaving the words that she knows will emotionally affect her readers!
Read over you piece again and ask yourself, "What is it that I want people to understand after reading my piece?" The excitement of moving somewhere new? The anxiety of leaving home? The worry about not seeing family? The confusion of living with a new language? All of these are great subjects for a piece of writing, and you have many moments like this in your piece. Perhaps in your next piece, you could chose one part of this first memoir, and expand it. This sentence, for example, really connected with me,
" I realized that this would be the last time I would ever sleep in this apartment."
I think you could probably write an entire piece just about this!
Thanks again for your story!
